Background Information

Miko Peled (1961) is an Israeli writer and peace activist. He was born and bred in Jerusalem and grew up into a well-known Zionist family. Miko’s grandfather was a signatory on the Israeli Declaration of Independence. His father, Mattiyahu Peled served as a general in the 1967 war. Miko followed in his fathers footsteps and served in numerous units including the Israeli Special Forces.

Father and son have more in common than just their active duty: both left the army disenchanted. Father, Mattiyahu left the army after Israel decided that the 1967 conquered territories would not be given back to the Palestinians as part of an all encompassing peace, but as future colonies to be occupied. For son Miko, the invasion of Lebanon in 1982 led to his definite break.

Both father and son made the transformation from fervent Zionist to advocate of Palestinian rights. It was following a terrible incident that turned Miko into an activist. In 1997, his 13 year old niece, the daughter of his sister Nurit Peled-Elhanan, was killed by a Palestinian suicide attack. Both Miko and Nurit concluded that the suicide attacks were a direct result of the oppression of the Palestinians and the occupation of their land.

Miko embarked on an intense period of self -awareness and development. He studied life and the insights of his father and took the step to initiate contact with the Palestinians, who had never been part of his Israeli life. The 2012 published book ‘The Generals Son - Journey of an Israeli in Palestine’ describes Peled his experiences and insights. Remarkably is the enormous contrast between the myths on which Israel bases its actions, and the reality in which there is structural injustice.

Peled argues that Israel and Palestine can only have a future if the lawlessness of the latter comes to an end. He sees two possibilities for Israel: a future in which Palestinians are permanently suppressed by military force and racist legislation; or a revolution to a real democracy , in which Israelis and Palestinians have equal rights within the limits of a common homeland. Peled sees in the latter case a glorious future.

Peleds status as ultimate insider, and his controlled, invasive analysis of the conflict from that privileged position, transcend the politically-inspired arguments which almost everywhere dominate the debate. His reading on 25 May offers an unique chance to listen to a voice that dares point the way to peace in a conflict that is characterized by hopelessness.
