Around 1800 the Highlands of Scotland were all the rage in Romantic Europe. The newly rediscovered, ancient Gaelic songs of Ossian the Bard were a literary sensation: stories populated by heroic noble savages, brave maidens, heathen gods and ghosts, set in an uninhabitable, prehistoric Highland scenery. Shortly after, Walter Scotts narrative poem “The Lady of the Lake” (1810) was a huge hit also: a gripping epic about love, honour and treason in 16th century Scotland.
Viennese composer Franz Schubert, too, fell under the Scottish spell. Ossian and Scott inspired him to write some of his most radical and some of his best-loved songs and ensembles. His seldom performed Ossian songs are veritable salon-operas. Scott’s “Lady of the Lake” provided Schubert with the words to his beloved “Ave Maria”.
With Nicola Wemyss (mezzo-soprano), Alistair Shelton-Smith & Mattijs van de Woerd (baritones) and Shuann Chai (piano).
