KID DYNAMITE TRIBUTE
Exciting kawina rhythms, languid badji grooves and swinging kasekos!
Kid Dynamite was a legendary saxophonist who mixed Surinamese music influences with jazz music and thereby developed a new music style. After WWII, Kid frequently played at the Casablanca Bar on the Zeedijk, which he considered to be his home base. The crowd stood in line to see Kid Dynamite perform and to hear him play. In those days his playing has been compared to that of Sonny Rollins. When Kid died in a car accident in Germany in 1963, he had already been somewhat forgotten due to the rise of pop music. In the early eighties he was rediscovered by some jazz lovers and by a new generation of Surinamese musicians in the Netherlands.
Where else could a tribute to Kid Dynamite be more appropriate than in Casablanca!
Efraïm Trujillo has taken that honorable task. For many years Efraïm was the saxophonist of the famous Surinamese world/jazz group Fra Fra Sound. In 2001 he worked as an arranger in the documentary Kid Dynamite – Surinamese Swing on the Zeedijk by Hans Hylkema about the life and music of Arthur Parisius a.k.a. Kid Dynamite. During the Red Light Jazz festival, this film will be screened every day in Theater Mascini, located next to Casablanca.
