Until the second half of the 19th century, wind instruments were regarded as a privilege for men. Women were not allowed to obtain instruction on these instruments when the first conservatories opened.
One of the first female wind players of the 19th century, the German clarinetist Margaret Knitel, was first heard of as a soloist in 1816 performing in Kassel, Germany. She eventually moved to the United States, making her mark on the Philadelphia music scene in 1824.
While she opened the game for the next generation of ladies playing wind instruments in Europe and the US, composers such as the Italian Giuseppe Maria Cambini, who died in 1825 and the German Franz Danzi, who died one year after Cambini, were encouraged to compose works for a new type of musical formation: The Wind Quintet.
We dedicate this concert to the musical heroines and heroes from the 19th century, both players and composers alike.
