On Thursday 7 June from 18:00 to 21:00 Young Transparency International is organizing a Young TI-session on corruption in the world of football at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. With the World Cup around the corner, we focus on the allegations of corruption in the 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar) allocation of the World Cup. Both countries are known for their human rights violations and high levels of corruption, which does not seem to match with FIFA’s ‘core values’ such as integrity, justice and accountability.
During the session Bonita Mersiades will give us insight into the game of corruption in the bidding process. In the Garcia report - looking into the 2018/2022 World Cup Bidding Process - Bonita was identified as a whistleblower. She advocated for the independent reform of FIFA and recently published her book Whatever It Takes: The Inside Story of the FIFA Way.
Gerke Berenschot, lawyer, researcher on corruption in sports and former board member of Transparency International Nederland, will engage with us on the issues of corruption in sports.
We’ll finish the night with beers & bites!
For the sake of the game, join us on 7 June in our fight for fair play in the World Cup!
