During Shakespeare's lifetime the English vogue for combining instruments of different kinds had no comparison throughout Europe. In their program ‘An Instrumental Songbook’ the Florens Ensemble will bring this tradition back to life.
Famous songs by John Dowland, whose tunes are still exceptionally in use in pop music nowadays, form the core of the program. The peculiar combination of gut- and wire-strung instruments (harp and harpsichord) will be explored.
The program is complemented with virtuosic solo music for dulcian. This special bass instrument, precursor of the modern bassoon, will sound in works by, among others, Bartolome’ Selma y Salaverde, who was a celebrated dulcian player in his time.
Florens Ensemble:
Kim Stockx - Dulcian and recorder
Emma Huijsser - Baroque harp and recorder
Edoardo Valorz - Harpsichord and organ
