New Love

Brahms’s Liebeslieder Walzer are the most beloved songs for vocal quartet and featured at one of Damask’s earliest concerts. New Love combines these familiar works with other love-songs for the same combination of vocal quartet and four-hand piano, including modern works inspired by the older standards. Young American composer Zachary Wadsworth has written the delightful Walzer einer neuen Liebe by taking some original material from Brahms’s Neue Liebeslieder set and adding his own playful musical and textual spin--all the added texts are on themes of same-sex love. Ned Rorem’s Four Madrigals, settings of Sappho fragments, likewise probe these themes in lush and gorgeous wartime settings, written long before it was socially acceptable to notice the unusual distribution of pronouns; and Schumann’s Spanisches Liebeslieder (a sort of sequel to his Spanisches Liederspiel, this time with the expanded palette of four-hand piano) combines dance rhythms with soaring vocal lines in a cycle as satisfying as it is underperformed.
