The quality of the supervisory relationship is fundamental for the PhDs to succeed. However, the power imbalance is such that PhDs rarely authorize the ombudsperson to investigate and intervene in misconduct. Examples of misconduct include intimidation, bullying, discrimination, abuse of power, exclusion, withholding of relevant information, humiliation, and (sexual) intimidation. How much PhDs are aware of how to manage or tackle such situations? How well-prepared is the university to aid students in such circumstances?
In order to find the answer to such questions, the Ph.D. academy has invited Prof. Daniel van den Hove for a speech and a round-table discussion regarding ‘’Misconduct at Maastricht University; Acknowledge, Act and Lead by Example’’.
Prof. Daniel van den Hove is a specialized remit Psychiatrie & Neuropsychologie at the school for Mental Health and Neuroscience of Maastricht University.( https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/d.vandenhove). He has published several articles related to the relationship between PhDs and supervisors and the importance that universities should be becoming more proactive and better organized to avoid misconduct.
